Aussie’s first remote working gig is worth it

An Australian couple are setting their sights on a career in remote working, but they’re taking a gamble with their future.

The couple, who met in the US and now live in Queensland, have found the work pays well and they are happy to be working on their own schedule.

The Australian Workplace Network (AWN) said it has more than 2,000 members working in remote locations across the country, but it is not a traditional sector.

It is a “non-traditional work force”, the group said, but “not necessarily a place where you are getting paid well”.

“It is the type of work that you would expect to be paid for at a regular job,” AWN chief executive Alex Coates said.

The pair are not just looking to get more work out of their life.

Mr Coates is a senior software engineer at Cisco Systems Australia, and he has been working as a remote work-from-home engineer for two years.

“I have a lot of clients in Sydney who I get on a weekly basis who are looking for work and I think it’s very rewarding,” he said.

“It’s a really good way of keeping yourself on track and really focused and motivated and keeping you on track with your work.”

The couple have a second job with the company they live in and are also looking to expand their remote work experience.

“The thing that really struck me was just the fact that you can’t really expect to get a good pay packet, especially in the context of your remote working,” Mr Coats said.

One way to increase your pay could be to look for other opportunities in the company, he said, or to find more remote work in the future.

“You can always look at a different job and see if you can get paid better for it,” he explained.

“That’s one of the things that we’ve learnt is that it’s not just about looking for other work and you can always work on your own.”

Mr Coacs and his wife are working at the moment as a part-time freelance employee for the organisation.

“We’ve got two jobs now and we’re really happy with our work, and we can’t wait to get back to our full-time jobs,” he added.

The organisation’s remote working program has been gaining popularity in Australia over the past two years, with employers like Facebook, Facebook, Airbnb and Spotify now offering a program.

The company has also started a new program, which offers an apprenticeship, but the couple said it was the right time for them to make a decision about their future plans.

“When we were looking for something to do in the States we found that this is the only opportunity for us to get paid fairly and it’s an opportunity to learn new things,” Mr Kavanagh said.
